Neuss, Germany – Yanfeng, a leading global automotive supplier, has announced the development of their new sustainable seat – the Reco Seat. This groundbreaking product marks a significant step in the company’s sustainability strategy, promising to redefine eco-friendly cabin solutions.
The Reco Seat, which stands for Recycle + Eco, is made from innovative and recycled materials and boasts a reduced product carbon footprint by up to 40% compared to traditional seating. This aligns with Yanfeng’s goals of using recycled raw materials and lightweight components to significantly reduce corporate carbon emissions and product carbon footprint.
“We are committed to providing innovative and sustainable cabin solutions and the development of the new Reco Seat is an important milestone in our sustainability strategy. We aim to contribute to the limitation of global warming to 1.5°C in line with the targets of the Paris Agreement,” said Uwe Borchers, Vice President and General Manager of Yanfeng Seating Europe & South Africa.
The Reco Seat features a variety of eco-friendly materials, including recycled foam, thermoplastic foam, and a green steel frame. The seat cover is made from 100% recycled soft drink bottles, reducing product carbon emissions by more than 20%. The use of industrial wastewater steam in the foam production and molding process also significantly reduces energy consumption and emissions.
Through their collaboration with a steel company, Yanfeng is able to offer a significant reduction of product carbon emissions with the Reco Seat. The use of up to 100% scrap steel as raw material, together with green electricity for the production of the recycled steel frame, reduces the product carbon footprint by over 60%. The seat pan is made from high-strength recycled plastic, achieving Yanfeng’s goal of replacing steel with plastic.
“The Reco Seat is currently in the development stage and serves as a great example of our competencies. We hope to start discussions with our customers about sustainability and circularity. Our engineering and innovation teams are working together to develop sustainable solutions for the next generation of vehicles,” added Borchers.
