“White Ribbon UK Embraces Prevention and Education as Key Tools in Combating Violence Against Women and Girls”

White Ribbon UK Commends Government’s Plan to Tackle Violence Against Women and Girls

On Friday 20 September, 2024, the Home Office announced their commitment to halve violence against women and girls in the next decade. This announcement was welcomed by White Ribbon UK, a leading organization dedicated to ending violence against women and promoting gender equality.

Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK, expressed their support for the Home Secretary’s plan, stating that preventing violence before it starts is crucial. This will require a change in culture, promoting equality, and challenging gender stereotypes in order to transform the harmful male cultures that contribute to violence.

Sully emphasized the importance of engaging men and boys in this effort, as it is often underfunded and proper investment is urgently needed. They also called for statutory sources of funding to be made available for specialist organizations working on Primary Prevention initiatives.

White Ribbon UK is pleased to see a “cross-government” approach in the plan, which provides the opportunity to bring together all areas of society to engage men and boys. This includes workplaces, sports organizations, and the media, in order to create positive culture change and shift harmful attitudes that lead to violence against women and girls.

The organization urges for continued and increased efforts to be made in order to achieve the goal of halving violence against women and girls in the next decade.
