Nottingham’s fifth-generation family business, Welch the Florist, has received a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the customer excellence category at the 2024 Midlands Family Business Awards, held at the Athena venue in Leicester.
The Midlands Family Business Awards, celebrating their 12th anniversary, recognise the achievements of family businesses across the UK. The event, which took place on 3rd October, also raised funds for the Brain Tumour Charity.
Founded in 1920 in Long Eaton, Welch the Florist has long upheld its family values and commitment to customer service. In 1973, Tony Shaw took over as director, bringing his expertise in flowers and horticulture to create striking floral arrangements.
Today, Tony’s son Gareth leads the business, having merged six florists into Welch. Under Gareth’s direction, Welch has grown into the leading flower delivery service in Nottinghamshire, serving customers both through Welch and Interflora.
Reflecting on the award, Gareth said: “This is the first time in our 104-year history that we’ve entered an award. Being shortlisted as a finalist came as a complete surprise, and to be highly commended among so many fantastic businesses is truly flattering.”
Charlotte Perkins, Group Managing Director of Wilsons, who organised the awards, said: “The judging process was particularly challenging, with so many outstanding entries. There were several rounds of debate before the final decisions on the Winners and Highly Commended. Every finalist should be proud of their achievements.”
Gareth added, “Being highly commended recognises the whole team’s dedication to excellence and is a testament to the hard work, passion, and expertise offered by the Welch the Florist team.”
