In a significant environmental triumph, the Volvo China Open has partnered with Sweden’s Bluewater, a leader in water purification and beverage innovation, to prevent the use of more than 350,000 single-use plastic water bottles at the 2024 event held at the Shenzen Hidden Grace golf course. This pioneering effort provided numerous Chinese golf fans with the option to enjoy clean water in various forms—ambient, chilled, sparkling, or warm—served from 21 high-tech water stations installed around the venue.
Bluewater’s founder and CEO, Bengt Rittri, stated, “Players, staff, and visitors alike played a key role in redefining sustainable hydration at sporting events by ensuring throwaway plastic water bottles didn’t make the cut at the 2024 Volvo China Open.” These hydration stations, located in crucial areas such as tees, catering, training, and VIP sections, dispensed over 175,000 liters of water that was purified and mineralized, ensuring it was free from all harmful contaminants.
Ms. Zhao Qin, the event chairperson of the Volvo China Open, during a press briefing, announced, “Together with Bluewater, we are not just delivering a great sporting event and high-quality hydration, but also promoting the sustainable development of golf in China and protecting our planet for future generations.”
Bengt Rittri, an esteemed environmental entrepreneur from Sweden, commented, “Over the past seven years or so, Bluewater has developed and evolved ground-breaking water purification and beverage dispensing solutions that help event and venue organizers around the world adopt eco-friendly practices.”
Rittri further highlighted Bluewater’s vision, adding, “Bluewater is committed leading the way in environmental stewardship within the sports industry,” underscoring the firm’s dedication to health, sustainability, and innovation. Bluewater’s systems are now a trusted resource for purified water at major international sporting and other events, including motor racing, marathons, and UN COP climate conferences.
