“New Book Tells the Incredible Story of Tragedy Turned to Triumph and Friendship That Transformed Lives”
London, UK – On November 15, 2024, Black Spring Press will release the highly anticipated Accidental Lives by Sylvia Holder and Lindsay Swan. This fast-paced and inspirational book is a true testament to the power of friendship, chance encounters, and the ability to turn tragedy into triumph. It follows the extraordinary journey of two women who, through their unconventional lives and profound friendship, end up changing the lives of thousands of young people in a small fishing village in South India.
Holder, a pre-war baby and natural rebel, meets Swan, 13 years her junior and a Scots-born adventurer, at a PR agency in Johannesburg. Their paths cross with a diverse group of characters, from Hollywood celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, to the beloved characters of The Wombles and The Monkees. Together, they embark on a journey that takes them around the world, from the Mayan ruins in Mexico to the high rises of Hong Kong.
Their PR consultancy, Holder Swan Public Relations, becomes an eclectic mix of clients and adventures, including promoting the Chichester Festival Theatre and Hampton Court Flower Show. Along the way, they encounter even more celebrities, such as Roger Moore, Joan Collins, Elton John, and members of the Rolling Stones.
Dame Margaret Drabble, author and fellow traveller to Zambia and India, describes the book as “an entertaining and moving account of the adventurous lives of that fine duo, Holder and Swan, two fearless, funny, and brave women.”
But it is not all glitz and glamour for the two women. In addition to their PR business, they also run a sandwich bar in the City and a PR training business. And despite their busy lives, their friendship remains at the core of everything they do.
Their lives take an unexpected turn when Holder, now retired and living on the south coast, receives news of the tragic death of Venkat, a young Indian man she had sponsored through school and university. Heartbroken, she returns to Venkat’s village near Chennai and makes a promise to bring education and a route out of poverty to the children of the village.
Sylvia, now in her 80s, and Lindsay, in her 70s, embark on a new journey to fulfill this promise. Despite their age and lack of knowledge about India, education, and charities, they manage to establish a state-of-the-art school, a sponsorship scheme for 400 children, and a university fund that pays the fees of 75 young people each year.
The book also reveals the special friendship between Sylvia and JR, Venkat’s brother, who manages the charity’s work in Kovalam with great success. Despite their differences in age, background, nationality, culture, language, and religion, the two make a formidable team, and their compatibility, affection, and shared sense of humor contribute to the charity’s success.
Accidental Lives is a captivating and inspiring read that will leave readers with a renewed sense of hope and the belief that anything is possible. The book will be available for purchase at all major bookstores and online retailers, including Amazon and Black Spring Press.
All royalties from the sale of the book will go towards the Venkat Trust, a charity dedicated to providing education and opportunities for children in Kovalam. For more information, visit www.venkattrust.org.uk.
