As summer arrives, British carpenters and builders are gearing up for a significant increase in demand for residential cladding. Experts are predicting a surge in the popularity of cladding, according to research conducted by Sitebuddyz.com, which reveals that 46% of British homeowners have considered using timber or artificial cladding to enhance the exterior of their properties.
Of these homeowners, 70% plan to undertake cladding projects this year, potentially resulting in around 2 million properties receiving a cladding facelift by the end of 2023.
The decision to opt for cladding is driven by several key factors, with the top three reasons being:
- Enhancing Property Appeal: 48% of homeowners aim to improve the overall look of their property.
- Weather Protection: 40% are motivated by safeguarding their homes from the elements.
- Energy Efficiency: 39% seek to insulate the exterior of their property to reduce energy costs.
The significant increase in energy bills, with a 54% surge in April 2022 followed by a further 27% increase in October, likely explains the growing emphasis on insulation.
Interestingly, the research shows a strong correlation between age and the desire for cladding. Among homeowners aged 18-24, 45% already have cladding installed, and 39% express interest in pursuing cladding projects. In contrast, only 6% of homeowners over the age of 55 have implemented cladding, with just 19% considering it.
The five UK cities with the highest percentage of homeowners interested in cladding their houses are all located in coastal areas exposed to extreme weather conditions and salty air, necessitating enhanced protection. These cities are Brighton (55%), Belfast (47%), Southampton (41%), Plymouth (39%), and London (32%).
Gareth Lloyd, a carpenter and cladder from Sussex, comments on the overwhelming demand for cladding, stating that on certain streets, nearly every third building now features some form of cladding. He mentions the popularity of fibre cement boards due to their great aesthetics, durability, and low maintenance requirements. Customers are also motivated by reducing heating bills, as cladding provides additional insulation.
James Gibbens, founder of Sitebuddyz, highlights the transformative potential of cladding, offering benefits such as weather protection, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced aesthetic appeal. He anticipates a substantial surge in cladding demand this summer, particularly from younger homeowners who seek a modern, stylish look and are more likely to invest in long-term home improvement projects.
The anticipated cladding boom this summer is expected to stimulate the UK construction sector, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth.
