UK Government Green Paper Provides Four Takeaway Victories for Disabled Individuals

UK Government Green Paper Announces 4 Wins for Disabled Community

London, 19 March 2025- The UK government has released a Green Paper outlining four significant wins for the disabled community, particularly in regards to the Access to Work grant system. The Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall, announced the proposed changes, which have been met with positivity and cautious optimism from organizations such as Genius Within CIC.

Genius Within CIC, founded by Dr. Nancy Doyle, is a non-profit, B-Corp certified organization that has been advocating for changes to the Access to Work system for over a decade. Dr. Doyle states, “The Access to Work system is broken- our community knows it, and we’ve been advocating for change for over a decade. This Green Paper signals a chance to fix a failing system and move towards a more inclusive, effective approach.”

The current Access to Work system has been criticized for being inaccessible, full of red tape, and causing significant delays in approving grants for disabled individuals. Genius Within CIC, who supports thousands of neurodivergent individuals every year, has firsthand experience with the challenges of the current system.

The four proposed changes in the Green Paper address some of the key concerns raised by the disability community and organizations such as Genius Within CIC. These include:

1. Right to Try- This proposal removes the fear of losing access to basic needs such as shelter and food, allowing disabled individuals to explore different employment opportunities without the risk of losing their support.

2. More Onus on Employers- The focus will shift from supporting individual employees to supporting employers, promoting systemic change and benefiting a larger number of employees in a more cost-effective manner.

3. Access to Work System Reform- This is seen as a positive step towards fixing a broken system, with an invitation for voices to contribute to the consultation process. Genius Within CIC invites the disability community to share their thoughts and experiences to help shape a system that better serves those it was designed to support.

4. One Billion Allocated for Disability Employability Support- This significant investment in employability support for the long-term unemployed and excluded from the labor market has the potential to make a significant impact in addressing the issue of nearly three million people unable to work due to a disability.

While the Green Paper acknowledges that there are still challenges and potential risks, the proposed changes offer hope for a more inclusive and supportive system for the disabled community. Genius Within CIC is committed to advocating for its community and is optimistic about the potential impact of these changes.
