Top-tier graduate reveals keys to achievement

Leila Thomas, CEO and Founder of the award-winning youth empowerment and social mobility charity Urban Synergy, recalls a chance encounter with a young student named Zak Ali at a school event in Catford. Ali approached her and asked for help in succeeding in life.

Thomas, while acknowledging she is no fairy godmother, recognized Ali’s potential and knew that with the right support, he could achieve great things.

Fast forward to present day, and Ali has achieved his dream of getting a first-class degree from Cambridge University. In an interview, he shares his journey from Catford to Cambridge and credits Urban Synergy for playing a significant role in his success.

“I am a first-generation British Bangladeshi, born and raised in South London. My parents never went to university, but I was fortunate to attend Colfe’s School for sixth form on a Leathersellers’ academic scholarship,” says Ali.

He attributes his success to his belief in learning from others and networking with anyone and everyone. He also credits Urban Synergy for providing him with valuable work experience opportunities and teaching him the importance of networking and corporate etiquette.

When asked about his future plans, Ali reveals that he has signed a training contract with a ‘Magic Circle’ law firm to become a Corporate Lawyer, with all expenses paid. But before starting his career, he plans to take an extended gap year to travel and gain new experiences.

Reflecting on his time with Urban Synergy, Ali says, “The charity played a significant role in developing my ambition early on, and I will always be indebted for this.”

He also has some words of advice for other young people coming through Urban Synergy. “Don’t limit yourself to what you learn in mentoring sessions. Seize every opportunity that Urban Synergy provides and put those skills into practice. Your only barrier is yourself!”

Urban Synergy, a registered charity, is known for its commitment to helping young people from diverse backgrounds excel in education and their careers. Its mentorship programs and networking opportunities have helped countless students like Zak Ali achieve their dreams.
