Top budget-friendly eateries in North Yorkshire – cooked by the region’s top chefs

Michelin chefs share their top budget meal picks in North Yorkshire

In our Money blog’s Cheap Eats series, we have reached out to Michelin-starred chefs in North Yorkshire to discover their favorite budget-friendly spots for a meal. The county is home to two of the country’s top chefs, Michael Wignall from The Angel at Hetton in Skipton and Shaun Rankin from Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall. Both chefs have recommended their top picks for a delicious yet affordable meal.

Ye Olde Naked Man in Settle is a popular choice for Michael Wignall, who says, “If I ever go cycling with the kids on the mountain bike, this place is on one of our routes.” He adds, “It’s so nice, really popular (for good reason), and right in the middle of Settle, a lovely little town.” Michael also mentions that he stops here for a caffeine boost before a challenging ride home.

Paradise Food, located at Daleside Nurseries, is another recommendation from Michael. He says, “The chef here is lovely, and we go back a long way.” The restaurant started as a pop-up at a garden center and has now become a permanent fixture. Michael praises the chef’s skills and the restaurant’s core values, making it a must-visit for a great meal.

Rind, located at Courtyard Dairy, has also caught Michael’s attention. He describes it as “very cool” and loves the stunning views it offers. The restaurant is known for its unique toppings and is just a 15-minute drive from Settle.

Shaun Rankin’s top picks include Blue Lion in East Witton, a traditional country pub in the Yorkshire Dales. Shaun suggests taking a scenic walk in the surrounding countryside before stopping here for lunch. He recommends trying their croque madame and Black Sheep-battered fish and chips from their light lunch menu.

Another spot recommended by Shaun is Oliver’s Pantry in Ripon. He says, “If you’re heading in to explore the characterful charm of Ripon, a trip here is a must.” The café offers great coffee, all-day brunch, and a seasonal lunch menu featuring fresh homemade dishes.

With such diverse and delicious options, North Yorkshire is truly a haven for food enthusiasts on a budget. So why not take a trip and try out these top picks from Michelin-starred chefs?
