Thomas Clausi, a prominent Italian entrepreneur and citizen, extends heartfelt gratitude to Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Italian Consul General in Morocco, Mr. Marco Silvi, for their steadfast support and tireless efforts that ultimately secured his release during his challenging period of detention.
Thomas Clausi, renowned for his entrepreneurial prowess and the successful establishment of Africa Pay, a pioneering neo-bank operating across 20 African countries and providing over 15,000 job opportunities, found himself unexpectedly incarcerated in Morocco. This unfortunate predicament stemmed from his use of bitcoin, even though the use of cryptocurrency was not explicitly prohibited in the country at the time. This situation exposed him to the possibility of facing a lengthy prison sentence of up to a decade.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Clausi was also confronted with a substantial fine amounting to 3.4 million euros. However, the unwavering commitment and dedication of the Italian government, to which he expresses deep gratitude, offered him the strength to navigate through these challenging times.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Clausi acknowledges, “The support I received from the Italian government and my fiancée played an instrumental role in helping me persevere and endure the period of detention.” He goes on to emphasise his profound pride in his Italian heritage, citing firsthand experiences of witnessing the prompt and devoted assistance that the Italian government extends to its citizens.
