Urban Synergy Graduate Inspires Students at Prendergast Ladywell School
London, UK – Gavin Kamara, a senior manager at financial group CMC, may have had a promising career, but his journey to success was not without its challenges. Raised in a single-parent household in Deptford, Lewisham, Kamara struggled academically and was labeled as an underachiever by his teachers. However, with the help of mentoring organization Urban Synergy, Kamara was able to break through these assumptions and graduate from university.
On Thursday, 20 June 2024, Kamara visited Prendergast Ladywell School to share his inspiring story with 180 students aged 12-13 years. Along with Urban Synergy’s Head of Programmes, Dianne Johnson, Kamara shared career tips and insights with the students in hopes of inspiring them to reach their full potential.
During his visit, Kamara spoke about his upbringing and how he overcame the challenges he faced. He also highlighted the importance of essential skills in the workplace, such as communication, problem-solving, adaptability, teamwork, time management, being personable, leadership, and critical thinking. Kamara left the students with one final quote, “It’s not how you start that counts, but how you finish that matters.”
The students at Prendergast Ladywell School were inspired by Kamara’s story and his advice. When asked about their thoughts on his journey, 99% of the students said they learned about a new career pathway, and 100% agreed that they had learned about skills valued in the workplace. One student said, “It was good – it helped me to think about skills needed when it’s time for me to get a job.”
Kamara’s visit was made possible by Urban Synergy, a mentoring organization that aims to inspire and empower young people from diverse backgrounds. Through their Career Role Model Seminars, students at Prendergast Ladywell School were introduced to professionals from various industries, including barristers and pilots, who shared their experiences and insights.
