The Cyber Scheme Introduces New Assessment to Propel Cyber Security Professionals Towards Success

Last Updated on: 21st November 2023, 11:44 pm

The Cyber Scheme has launched an innovative assessment, accompanied by corresponding training, aimed at assisting entry-level, graduate, and junior cyber security professionals in charting a rewarding career path in security testing. The Cyber Scheme Fundamental Level (CSFL) training course and examination serve as an ideal starting point for individuals aspiring to become cyber security testers, formerly known as penetration testers or ethical hackers.

The journey from novice to a billable asset in the field of security testing is both time-consuming and demanding. There exists a noticeable gap between the practical skills and knowledge possessed by recent graduates or career starters and the qualifications required by employers. The Cyber Scheme’s new assessment seeks to bridge this gap and expedite the transition from a career starter to a billable consultant. Developed by The Cyber Scheme, a company with a proven track record in creating NCSC certified and assured training and assessments for technical, offensive security at the highest available level.

The CSFL assessment evaluates the competency of junior and graduate cyber security professionals seeking or already in entry-level roles. The assessment places a strong emphasis on practical skills and includes a multiple-choice theory section designed to prepare candidates for future, higher-level certifications. Candidates gain fundamental skills and knowledge to embark on the journey towards becoming a certified security tester. When needed, this assessment can expedite progression to the Check Team Member level or its equivalent, validating and showcasing practical knowledge sought by employers.

This qualification can be pursued independently or as part of a company’s onboarding program for new staff. The Cyber Scheme is also offering a limited number of discounted slots for individuals transitioning from technical roles in the military or the police force. While The Cyber Scheme offers face-to-face training for this assessment, the necessary knowledge and skills can also be acquired through self-study and experience, making this qualification attainable regardless of one’s cyber security education or academic background.

The Cyber Scheme firmly believes that this qualification is essential for those seeking entry-level positions in technical cyber security. It equips candidates with the skills desired by employers and bridges the gap between education and practical application.

To complement the assessment, The Cyber Scheme has developed a comprehensive training course designed to enhance the skills and knowledge required for success in the examination. The course spans two and a half days and takes place at a purpose-built assessment center in Cheltenham. The Cyber Scheme believes in the effectiveness and customisation of in-person training over online or remote options. Upon entering the classroom, candidates will immerse themselves in the world of cyber security through practical, hands-on exercises and expert guidance from a Cyber Scheme Instructor. The training covers a range of topics, including Linux and Windows systems, scripting, networking fundamentals, web application technologies, vulnerability scanning, and the ethical and legal aspects of security testing.

The training is led by Paul Richards, a subject matter expert in ethical hacking and penetration testing, specialising in helping others advance within the field of cyber security through training, mentoring, and rigorous assessment.

Topics covered in the training include:

  • Laws and Ethics Associated with Security Testing
  • Building and Maintaining a Security Testing Device
  • Fundamental Linux CLI for Security Testing
  • Fundamental Linux Scripting for Security Testing
  • Fundamental Python Coding for Ethical Hackers
  • Fundamental Windows Operating System Commands
  • Computer Networking Fundamentals
  • Packet Capturing for Security Testing and Ethical Hacking
  • Web Application Fundamentals
  • Vulnerability Analysis Fundamentals
  • Testing Mobile Devices Fundamentals
  • Introduction to Testing in the Cloud

Assessments and training can now be booked, with the first dates scheduled for November 2023. Additional information, a downloadable syllabus, and a booking calendar are available on The Cyber Scheme’s website.
