Coastline Housing Celebrates Completion of Largest Affordable Housing Development in Cornwall

Tuesday 2 July, 2024

Coastline Housing, a local landlord, has successfully completed its largest affordable housing development to date at Quintrell Downs, bringing much-needed housing options to the community. The final residents, Doug and Judy Hodges, were given the honor of cutting the ribbon alongside the Mayor of Newquay, Councillor Drew Creek.

The development, which encompasses 140 homes, includes a mix of affordable rent properties, shared ownership homes, rent to buy, and open market homes. It also features 28 flats for people aged over 55, with easy access lifts and communal facilities, providing housing options for older persons.

Chris Weston, Director of Development and Commercial Services, expressed his delight at the completion of the project, stating that it is Coastline’s largest project to date. He also highlighted the phased approach to the development, which allowed for new residents to move in along the way. Weston added that the new community at Quintrell Downs is expected to be very happy in their new homes.

The development was made possible through funding from Homes England, support from Cornwall Council, and investment from Coastline itself.

This milestone achievement coincides with Coastline Housing’s recognition as the 4th fastest-growing housing association in the country, according to a list published by Inside Housing magazine. This marks the 7th consecutive year that Coastline has appeared in the top ten list, which measures the number of new homes housing associations are building as a percentage of their current stock. This year, Coastline has moved up three places in the rankings, from 7th to 4th, after building 191 new homes in Cornwall over the last financial year, bringing its total stock in ownership or management to 5,223.

Steve Harrison, Chair of Coastline Housing, expressed his pleasure at being recognized for bringing much-needed homes to Cornwall and reiterated the organization’s determination to continue this effort. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry, including supply chain issues, contractor administration, and difficult weather periods, and credited the success to the great partnerships, communities, and organizations that Coastline works with.

Looking ahead to 2024 and 2025, Coastline Housing has plans to continue developing more affordable rented and shared ownership properties in various areas across Cornwall. The organization has also joined forces with other professionals and businesses as part of the Homes for Cornwall movement, an initiative aimed at finding innovative solutions to the housing crisis for future generations.

Nathan Mallows, Director of Finance, People, and Change, emphasized the support received from the local authority and communities, as well as grants and loan finance from Homes England and Cornwall Council, and other supportive lenders. He also highlighted the significant economic impact that investment in homes has, not only for Coastline but for the entire community of Cornwall.

Louise Beard, Deputy CEO of Coastline Housing, expressed her excitement to engage with customers in the new homes, build strong communities, and continue to listen and respond to feedback on services and future development plans.
