STIHL Reduces Carbon Emissions and Releases 2022 Sustainability Report

Last Updated on: 22nd November 2023, 04:35 am

STIHL, the family-owned company, has announced a substantial reduction in their direct carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) for the year 2022. The 43% decrease is largely attributed to the conversion of their production companies to green electricity.

The company has also announced the introduction of various initiatives to meet their responsibility for sustainability, including reducing their consumption of natural gas and oil by 40% worldwide by 2030. To do this, over 100 individual measures have been identified, with a particular emphasis on technological advances.

STIHL is also working to make their products as circular as possible, launching a pilot project to investigate the potential of a fully circular clearing saw. They have also initiated projects to reduce plastic packaging and carbon emissions, with a focus on converting the packaging of mowing heads from plastic to solid and corrugated fiberboard. This is expected to save over 100 metric tons of plastic by the end of 2023.

In terms of supplier management, sustainability has become a key factor. STIHL has expanded the main purchasing criteria to include sustainability-oriented aspects, such as a risk exposure analysis of all suppliers. For greater transparency and sustainability, the company has also started analyzing potentially critical supply chains as a whole.

Dr. Michael Prochaska, STIHL Executive Board member for Human Resources and Legal Affairs and in charge of sustainability at the Group, stated “Through our sustainability activities, we hope to make a positive contribution to climate change mitigation, work more resource-efficiently, and continue ensuring fair working conditions in order to keep making it easier for people to work in and with nature going forward.”
