The UK’s endeavour to roll out smart meters gained substantial momentum in January 2024, with a significant 30% increase from the preceding month, resulting in 221,000 installations.
This advancement marks a 21% enhancement over the same period last year, setting a record for January installations not seen since the onset of 2020, as per ElectraLink’s recent findings.
Observers have highlighted this development as a crucial milestone, achieving the highest January installation figures in the aftermath of the Covid-19 disruptions.
The impact of the pandemic was starkly evident in April 2020 when new meter installations dwindled to a mere 12,000 due to enforced social distancing measures.
According to ElectraLink, the smart meter rollout, which commenced in 2012, has seen a cumulative total of 22.48 million installations. In January, regions traditionally leading in installation numbers continued their strong performance, with East England installing 27,000 meters, followed by southern England with 25,000, and the East Midlands with 21,000.
