Saint-Gobain PAM’s Historic Holwell Foundry Site to Be Auctioned by NCM Auctions

Last Updated on: 26th January 2025, 04:34 pm

Saint-Gobain PAM UK has partnered with NCM Auctions to oversee the full clearance of its historic Holwell Works foundry in Melton Mowbray. The Yorkshire-based specialists in auctions and asset management will also handle asset recovery across the entire site.

Established in the 1870s, the Holwell foundry has played a vital role in Melton Mowbray’s industrial legacy for more than 150 years, producing access covers and gully gratings for the road, water, and utility sectors. Despite its long-standing success, the site has closed due to production being relocated to Saint-Gobain PAM’s sister facility in Blénod, France. This transition is part of the company’s strategy to halve road ironwork carbon emissions and help customers achieve their net zero goals.

Under this notable contract, NCM Auctions will carry out a full site clearance programme at Holwell Works. The process includes careful decommissioning and maximising the value of assets through a combination of auctions and private treaty sales. Saint-Gobain PAM has emphasised their commitment to responsible site management, ensuring environmental and safety compliance throughout the project.

The online auction will feature machinery and processing equipment from the nine-acre site, including melting and moulding plants, finishing lines, assembly areas, workshops, and scrap metal recovery facilities.

The auction catalogue offers an extensive selection of specialist foundry equipment, such as induction furnaces, dip ovens, overhead magnet cranes, manipulators, and robotic welders. Other items include milling machines, lathes, compressors, conveyors, and hoppers, among many others.

Unlike some companies that may focus only on high-value items, Saint-Gobain PAM is committed to sustainability. By prioritising the repurposing and recycling of machinery and equipment, the company aims to support local businesses, communities, and charities while minimising landfill waste.

Amy Rutherford, Partnership Lead at NCM, stated: “This contract award from Saint-Gobain PAM represents a significant milestone for NCM Auctions and reinforces our position as a trusted and leading partner for specialised industrial site clearances like the Holwell Works site.

“Saint-Gobain PAM’s commitment to sustainability aligns with our approach, where valuable resources are repurposed, recycled and reintegrated into the circular economy.

“Due to the size and scale of this site, the auction includes hundreds of assets, from specialist foundry and steelmaking lines to industrial machinery that will be suitable for a wide variety of manufacturing applications. We’ve already had a lot of interest from overseas buyers.”

The auction catalogue is live, with bidding set to conclude from 1pm on Thursday, 20 February.

Private Treaty offers are also welcome. Interested parties can arrange viewings or request further details by contacting NCM on 01302 898260 or via email.
