Tech mogul Elon Musk has reportedly made a generous contribution to a political group supporting the presidential campaign of Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, sources have confirmed that Musk has made a “sizable amount” donation to America PAC, a group that can accept unlimited funds for political purposes.
The exact amount of Musk’s donation is not known, but it is expected to be disclosed on July 15 when the PAC is required to disclose its list of donors. This news comes after Trump, who is set to be officially nominated as the Republican Party’s candidate next week, met with Musk and other wealthy donors in March.
In response to reports of the meeting, Musk took to social media to clarify his stance, stating, “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.” This statement was made on X, a social media company owned by Musk.
This is not the first time Musk has been linked to Trump’s campaign. In May, he denied media reports that there were talks of him potentially taking on an advisory role in a Trump presidency. Representatives for Musk, who is the CEO of electric car company Tesla, rocket company SpaceX, and social media company X, have been asked for comment on the recent donation reports.
In a statement, Joe Biden’s campaign spokesman James Singer criticized Musk’s support for Trump, stating that he knows Trump is “a sucker who will sell America out, cutting his taxes while raising taxes on the middle class by $2,500”. He also highlighted Biden’s track record of standing up for the middle class throughout his career and expressed confidence in his ability to win the election in November.
Musk’s political leanings have become more apparent in recent years, which has had an impact on Tesla’s reputation and sales. Last month, Trump reaffirmed his promise to immediately end the Biden administration’s support for the electric vehicle industry, but also commended Musk for his work at Tesla, stating, “I’m a big fan of electric cars. I’m a fan of Elon.” Musk also shared that he and Trump have had “some conversations” and that the President is a “huge fan” of Tesla’s electric pickup trucks, known as Cybertrucks.
While Musk has publicly criticized Biden’s policies on immigration and electric vehicles, as well as his age, his donation to the Trump campaign suggests a level of support for the Republican Party. As the election draws closer, the impact of Musk’s political involvement may become more apparent.
