“Recognizing the Unheralded Champions of Nature Conservation: The 2025 NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording”

NBN Trust Launches NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording 2025

The National Biodiversity Network Trust (NBN Trust) announced today the launch of the NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording 2025. These annual awards recognize the dedication and hard work of individuals and groups in the wildlife-recording world.

Nominations for the 2025 Awards will open on January 9th and close on April 21st. The NBN Awards aim to celebrate and honor those who are making a difference in improving our understanding of the natural world and promoting evidence-based decision making for the conservation of UK wildlife.

“The achievements we wish to celebrate through the NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording 2025 can include anything from the number of records made by an individual or group, to technical innovations in recording wildlife,” says Lisa Chilton, CEO of NBN Trust. “It has never been more important to record the wildlife around us, and the data we collect are essential for guiding and measuring nature’s recovery.”

There are seven categories of awards: the NBN Lifetime Achievement Award, NBN Verifier’s Award, NBN Young Person’s Award (open to individuals aged 11-20), NBN Newcomer Award, NBN Award for Marine Wildlife Recording, NBN Award for Terrestrial Wildlife Recording, and NBN Group Award.

Individuals and groups can nominate themselves or others for an award by visiting bit.ly/NBNawards25 and completing the appropriate nomination form. The deadline for nominations is April 21st, 2025.

Seven organizations have generously sponsored the NBN Awards this year, including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Opticron, Habitat Aid, Field Studies Council, William Collins, British Wildlife magazine, and Natural History Book Service (NHBS).

“We are grateful for the support of these organizations in recognizing and honoring the hard work of wildlife recorders,” says Chilton. “Please help us celebrate their commitment and dedication by nominating someone for the 2025 NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording.”

They manage the NBN Atlas, the UK’s largest repository of publicly available biodiversity data, and support the National Biodiversity Network, a collaboration of around 200 organizations committed to sharing UK wildlife data. Their goal is to provide a robust evidence base for environmental decision making. For more information, visit nbn.org.uk.

It was originally called the UK Awards for Biological Recording and Information Sharing and has since evolved into the NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording as it is known today.
