Royal Forestry Society Encourages Innovation in Honor of United Nations International Day of Forests
London, UK – On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the United Nations will celebrate its annual International Day of Forests with the theme “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.” As an organization dedicated to the sustainable management and improvement of forests, the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) is committed to promoting innovation in the forestry industry.
Here are five ways in which the RFS is encouraging innovation:
1. Supporting Woodland Owners and Managers
The RFS, in partnership with the Royal Scottish Forestry Society (RSFS), offers Grants for Resilient Woodlands to its members. These grants support the creation of a network of climate change, pest, and disease resilient woodlands across the UK. The grants can be used to take risks and innovate with new species, mixes, or silvicultural techniques. They can also be used to introduce diversity in forests, woodlands, and landscapes.
2. Sharing Innovation
Through a variety of events and resources, the RFS has developed a unique platform for sharing knowledge and expanding understanding. Divisional meetings, courses, workshops, lectures, and tours are complemented by the Quarterly Journal of Forestry, which features cutting-edge research papers, articles, case studies, and blogs.
3. Supporting Careers
Thanks to the support of the ALA Green Charitable Trust, the RFS offers the Forestry Roots scheme, which provides paid traineeships for individuals between the ages of 18 and 30. This initiative matches RFS members with job opportunities and has become one of the largest training schemes in the UK. The RFS is also in the process of setting up an Early Careers Foresters Network, which will provide additional support and resources for young professionals in the industry.
4. Working with Young People
The RFS has developed the Level 1 Award in Forestry in the Community for young people seeking their first experience and qualifications in forestry. Additionally, the organization participates in Careers Roadshows to showcase the range of opportunities available in forestry and woodland management.
5. Inspiring Children
In partnership with Bags of Ethics, the RFS offers the Green Tree Badge, an initiative aimed at inspiring one million children to think about the management of woodlands. This program builds on the success of the Teaching Trees program and the Junior Forester Award, which has over 100,000 registrations and is the first of its kind linked to forestry.
