Conde Nast, the publisher of renowned magazines such as Vogue, Wired, and GQ, has announced a multi-year partnership with artificial intelligence company OpenAI. The partnership was revealed on Tuesday, with OpenAI stating that their platforms ChatGPT and SearchGPT will feature content from top brands including Vogue, The New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveler, GQ, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, Wired, and Bon Appétit.
Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed, this is not the first time OpenAI has collaborated with a major media company. In June, the company entered into a “multi-year content deal” with Time magazine, granting them access to over 100 years of Time’s content. This partnership will allow OpenAI to display Time’s content when users search for information on ChatGPT, and use their content to further enhance their AI models.
OpenAI has also recently formed partnerships with other news publishers such as the Financial Times, Axel Springer (owner of Business Insider), Le Monde, and Prisa Media in France and Spain, respectively. However, these deals come amidst legal action from other media companies. The New York Times and eight other daily newspapers are currently suing OpenAI for copyright infringement, alleging that their content was used without permission to train ChatGPT.
Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer at OpenAI, expressed the company’s commitment to working with Conde Nast and other news publishers to ensure that AI continues to uphold accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality reporting in the news industry. This sentiment was also echoed by Conde Nast’s CEO, Roger Lynch, in a memo to employees. Lynch acknowledged the challenges faced by news companies in this ever-evolving digital landscape, and stated that their partnership with OpenAI will help to offset some of the revenue lost due to the impact of technology on content monetization.
The partnership between Conde Nast and OpenAI marks a significant step towards the integration of AI in news discovery and delivery. As the media industry continues to adapt to the changing landscape, collaborations like this one will play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and integrity of news reporting.
