With fuel prices in the United Kingdom escalating by more than 40% since 2020, British motorists face increasing costs at the pump. To assist drivers in economizing, the ‘Roadtrip’ app, first introduced in New Zealand by Ben Robertson and Emory Fierlinger, has now launched in the UK. The app, which became a hit in New Zealand by reaching the #1 spot on the NZ App Store, offers an innovative solution by estimating petrol costs using vehicle registration numbers.
Emory Fierlinger explained the motivation behind the UK launch, saying, “After our app featured in a viral TikTok video, a comment saying ‘we need this in the UK’ received over 3000 likes. That was a clear signal of the strong demand for our app in the UK.”
He added, “Based on the huge demand we saw, we immediately began work on the UK version, and after months of dedication, we’re thrilled to finally release it today. We’re so excited to bring Roadtrip to such a large audience in the UK, especially at a time when the cost of living is a challenge for so many.”
Users of Roadtrip can input their destination and car reg plate to get an instant calculation of the fuel costs for their trip, based on the specific MPG of their car model and real-time fuel prices along the route. The app also displays the 10 cheapest petrol stations along the route and provides options for the most economical routes.
Additionally, Roadtrip helps users locate the cheapest petrol or diesel prices nearby, using real-time data from over 4000 stations across the UK, leveraging the new Pumpwatch scheme. This feature makes Roadtrip useful for various purposes, including splitting petrol costs among friends, comparing costs for holiday travels, or choosing the best car for a journey.
Emory Fierlinger noted the broader benefits of Roadtrip, stating, “For us it’s about providing a tool that can make a real difference in how people can save money on petrol day to day. Our mission is to help drivers make informed decisions about their travel costs, ultimately leading to massive savings over time”.
The app is available for free on both iOS and Android devices. For more information about Roadtrip and to download the app, please visit Roadtrip’s website.
