New Research Shows “Bohemian Rhapsody” Named UK’s Favorite Driving Song

JET, a leading fuel brand, celebrated its platinum anniversary by conducting new research to determine the UK’s top driving songs from the past 70 years. The online survey, conducted in July 2024, polled 2,000 UK drivers and revealed the nation’s favorite songs to drive to.

Topping the list was Queen’s iconic hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” released in 1975, with 38% of the votes. In second place was Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” released in 2001 and re-released in 2024, with 31% of the votes. Tied for third place were Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” released in 1958, and The Mamas and The Papas’ “California Dreamin’,” released in 1965, both receiving 27% of the votes.

Other top driving songs from various decades included Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” (1983), Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” (1957), and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” (1992).

The survey also asked participants about their preferences for the perfect driving anthem, with over half (55%) choosing “lyrics they can sing along to.” Other characteristics included a “catchy chorus” (14%), a “strong drumbeat” (9%), and an “iconic guitar riff” (8%).

Respondents also shared how music makes them feel while driving, with “happy” being the top emotion (52%), followed by “nostalgic” (18%), “excited” (8%), “calm” (7%), and “optimistic” (5%).

When asked who should pick the music, 61% of drivers believed it should be the driver, while 21% thought everyone should take turns and 8% believed the passenger should choose.

JET’s research spanned eight decades, from 1954 – the year the brand was founded – to 2024. The full list of top driving songs by decade can be found on the JET website.

The online survey was conducted in celebration of JET’s platinum anniversary, showcasing its long-standing presence in the UK. JET, distributed by https://pressat.co.uk/, is committed to providing quality fuel to its customers and has become a trusted brand for UK drivers over the past 70 years.
