Urban Synergy, an award-winning youth empowerment and social mobility charity, believes that self-esteem is fostered when young people see others who look like them achieving success in education and employment. The charity’s Co-Chair of the Youth Council, Stefan Harriot, who himself came through the Urban Synergy Mentoring Programme, recently spoke to 120 year 9 students at Addey & Stanhope Secondary School online to launch the charity’s first “Success Looks Like US” Career Assemblies.
During the assembly, Harriot shared his personal journey from a local Lewisham school to the world of work. He discussed the challenges he faced during his GCSEs and how he overcame them to focus and excel in his A levels. With the support of a mentor from Urban Synergy, Harriot secured an apprenticeship at the London Stock Exchange as a Data Analyst, and has since become a Market Risk Analyst.
Harriot also emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities for achieving a healthy work-life balance. The assembly received positive feedback from both students and teachers, with one student stating, “One thing I liked about the assembly is how his life is linked to ours,” and a teacher thanking Harriot for the “inspirational and powerful assembly.”
Urban Synergy, which was founded in 2007, has helped over 30,000 young people aged between 9 and 24 to reach their potential. The charity’s approach focuses on providing early support to build confidence and showcase possibilities for young people.
