Nepal Climate Resilience Gets Boost with The Glacier Trust and Happy Barista’s Charity Coffee Roast Launch

The Glacier Trust and Happy Barista have announced a new collaboration that aims to support climate adaptation efforts in Nepal. In a joint effort, the two organizations have released a special charity coffee roast, sourced from the Solukhumbu region of Nepal.

The launch of this limited-edition Solukhumbu Charity Roast marks a significant milestone in the decade-long partnership between The Glacier Trust and Happy Barista. The coffee beans used in this roast are grown in the Solukhumbu region, which is a central area for The Glacier Trust’s climate adaptation work. This is also the first time that Solukhumbu coffee beans have been roasted in the UK, showcasing the uniqueness of the region and the success of climate change adaptation methods.

The Solukhumbu Charity Roast is a result of the collaboration’s efforts to support local farmers in transitioning to coffee cultivation as a sustainable response to the impacts of climate change. The Himalayan foothills, where Solukhumbu is located, have been facing challenges such as rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and intense rainfall events. These have made traditional subsistence farming increasingly difficult and risky. With support from The Glacier Trust, farmers in Solukhumbu have found a solution by growing high-quality coffee. This crop, when grown in a layered agroforestry system, is well-suited to the changing conditions and can provide long-term economic stability.

“We are delighted to partner with Happy Barista to shed light on the inspiring people of Solukhumbu and the important climate adaptation work being done there,” said Mark Holmes, Executive Director of The Glacier Trust. “This collaboration goes beyond just producing exceptional coffee – it is about supporting vulnerable communities facing the harsh realities of climate change.”

Happy Barista, a County Durham-based roaster known for its ethically sourced and expertly crafted coffee, has worked closely with The Glacier Trust to ensure that the roast highlights the unique flavor profile of the region while directly supporting the farmers.

“We are deeply honored to be a part of this collaboration,” said Tom Bolland of Happy Barista. “We believe that coffee can be a force for good, and this project is a testament to that belief. Every cup of this roast tells a story of resilience, community, and hope.”

The proceeds from the sale of the Solukhumbu Charity Roast will directly support The Glacier Trust’s ongoing work in Nepal. This includes initiatives such as agroforestry, climate-resilient farming, water resource management, and climate education and research – crucial components in helping communities adapt to the increasing pressures of a warming planet.

The Solukhumbu Charity Roast has received a score of 83/100 on a recent Q-grading, placing it within the range of very good coffee. It is now available for purchase through Happy Barista’s coffee pod and online store. Customers are invited to savor the rich, vibrant flavors while contributing to vital climate action efforts in Nepal.
