A new platform has launched in Manchester that gives residents on-demand access to tools and appliances, enabling them to rent rather than buy items they may only use occasionally.
Tooltap Manchester, a locally founded venture, has introduced an online rental platform offering cleaning equipment including carpet cleaner hire and pressure washer hire in Manchester, with additional items expected to be added in coming months.
“Our research showed that the average power tool is used for less than 13 hours throughout its lifetime, while items like carpet cleaners are typically used just twice yearly,” explains a company representative. “This presented an opportunity to create a more efficient solution for Manchester residents.”
At a time when many are feeling the pinch of rising household expenses, Tooltap offers a practical alternative to ownership—making professional-grade equipment more affordable and accessible to the wider community.
Founded by local businesspeople, the platform is designed with a Manchester-first mindset. Inspired by similar initiatives in other cities, Tooltap has been adapted to fit the specific needs of Greater Manchester’s neighbourhoods and homes.
Users benefit from a streamlined service that includes identity checks via digital verification, full sanitisation of items between hires, and the option of home delivery within Manchester or collection from a Salford-based hub. Rental periods are adaptable, supporting both short-term jobs and extended projects.
Tooltap’s environmentally-conscious model also plays a role in reducing waste and unnecessary consumerism. “Each tool shared means one less item manufactured and eventually discarded,” notes the company representative. “We’re building a more sustainable approach to accessing the equipment people need only when they need it.”
Future plans include broadening the inventory in line with what local users are looking for. Potential additions could include kitchen gadgets, outdoor gear, and home renovation tools. “We’re taking a data-driven approach to scaling, focusing on categories where sharing makes the most economic and practical sense for Manchester residents,” the representative added.
