NAMI Eastside, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing mental health concerns, is hosting a significant luncheon on October 5th centered around the theme of coming together to combat the mental health and loneliness epidemic, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
Inspired by the work of U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy in confronting the loneliness epidemic, NAMI Eastside’s luncheon seeks to use his Surgeon General’s Advisory as a starting point for meaningful conversations that connect, educate, and inspire participants.
The event aims to provide an educational experience for attendees, with the funds raised benefiting the mental health of communities in East King County and beyond. These funds support NAMI’s support groups and educational services, which are offered free of charge.
The luncheon will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 5th, at the Redmond Seattle Marriot. More information, registration details, and donation opportunities can be found on NAMI Eastside’s website. Media assets and additional information are also available in the press kit at NAMI-Eastside.org/press-kits.
The theme of the luncheon underscores the critical importance of community and connection in the healing process, particularly during challenging times. Much of the discourse at the luncheon is influenced by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy’s Advisory on Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. At the conference, NAMI Eastside will present Dr. Murthy with the NAMI Eastside Mental Health Champion Award.
Dr. Murthy’s advisory highlights that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. He emphasises the need for healing through social connection, stating that building community and connections with one another is essential to address the isolation that existed before the pandemic and mend the nation’s social fabric.
NAMI Eastside’s support groups and classes are designed to combat loneliness through genuine connections, but many in the community are unaware of the free services the organisation provides. This luncheon aims to bridge that awareness gap, educate attendees, and inspire them to take action.
While the luncheon may not completely solve the loneliness crisis, its goal is to facilitate healing by bringing people together, sparking meaningful connections, and fostering community building.
Members of the community, partners, and supporters are all invited to participate in this significant event, which offers an opportunity for enlightenment and a chance to join the fight against loneliness.
