Local animal shelter faces homelessness due to planning decision

Local Charity Pleas for Help in Finding New Rescue Home

Monday 8 July, 2024 – PAWS, a well-known local charity dedicated to giving pets a second chance, is urgently seeking a new home for their rescue operations. Founder Susan Curran has made a heartfelt appeal for assistance in finding suitable premises to continue their important work.

After five years of tireless fundraising, PAWS was thrilled to secure a plot of land and outbuildings in Delph. This was a significant achievement, considering the charity had been under an eviction order for two years at their previous rented site in Todmorden. However, despite investing £15,000 into two failed planning applications and a pre-planning application, PAWS has been left homeless since July 2023.

As a result, the charity is unable to offer the same level of support to the community and their beloved pets as they once did. This comes at a time when rescue centers across the country are facing a crisis and the demand for their services has never been greater. Many organizations have been forced to close due to the overwhelming number of abandoned and neglected animals being left on the streets. The rising cost of living has also had a significant impact on animal charities, as owners struggle to afford food and care for their pets.

PAWS had ambitious plans for their new site in Delph, including the creation of nature corridors to promote diversity in insect and wildlife groups. The charity also intended to implement environmentally-friendly initiatives such as solar power and the use of sustainable materials. However, with their current predicament, these plans have been put on hold.

Founder Susan Curran is appealing to the public for any assistance in finding a new site that can accommodate kennels and a cattery. The charity hopes to continue their model of being environmentally, animal, and human-friendly, with a focus on sustainability and constantly seeking ways to improve their operations.

The ideal site would also need to provide facilities for a staff member to be on-site 24 hours a day, ensuring the well-being and safety of the animals in their care. PAWS has made a positive impact in the local community and surrounding areas, thanks to their dedicated team of volunteers, supporters, and trustees who are committed to building a brighter future for their rescue.

Currently operating at a reduced capacity, PAWS relies on foster carers and home-to-home rehoming to provide their services. The charity offers a crucial lifeline to pet owners who have been forced to cut back or have been turned away by other organizations, leaving them distressed and upset. Sadly, PAWS is forced to turn away dogs and cats daily, highlighting the desperate need for a pet rescue in their area.

The charity is open to purchasing, renting, or leasing land and buildings for their operations. If anyone can assist PAWS in finding a new home, please contact the charity at [INSERT CONTACT DETAILS]. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
