Cumbria Community Foundation has recently announced the commission of a major report focusing on the city of Carlisle and its surrounding rural areas. The report, titled “Carlisle: Opportunities and Challenges,” will delve into the social needs and community issues of the city, highlighting ongoing efforts to address disadvantage and identifying opportunities for community growth.
This report follows three previously published reports by the Foundation since 2017, which focused on the entire county of Cumbria, as well as specific areas such as West Cumbria and Furness. To ensure the accuracy and relevance of the report, a steering group consisting of local individuals has been established, with the leadership of Kevin Walsh, Vice Chair of Cumbria Community Foundation.
In a statement, Walsh expressed the significance of previous reports in bringing people together and securing investments to address areas of need in various communities. He also noted the current progress and development in Carlisle, including projects such as the Southern Relief Road, the Carlisle Station Gateway project, Uncovering Roman Carlisle, and the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine. However, he acknowledged that the city also faces several challenges which the report aims to address.
Scheduled for release later this year, the report is expected to serve as a vital resource and reference document for organizations and businesses within Carlisle, as well as the wider county and beyond. To ensure the inclusivity of community input, a public online meeting will be held on Tuesday 9 July. Interested individuals can register for the event at https://register.enthuse.com/ps/event/CarlisleOpportunitiesandChallengesLaunch2024. Additionally, an online survey will be available for public input, with details to be announced soon.
Funding for the report has been provided by Kingmoor Park, Sellafield Ltd, Riverside Housing, and the previous local authorities of Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council. Its findings and recommendations will be utilized to inform and influence key decision-makers, including local authorities, government agencies, potential philanthropists and donors, funders, healthcare providers, businesses, and third sector organizations.
