The improper disposal of single-use vapes has emerged as a pressing issue in the UK, garnering increasing concern over the past year. Recent research conducted by the BBC reveals a startling statistic: a whopping five million disposable vapes are discarded each week, marking a significant fourfold surge compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the study highlights a distressing fact that only 17% of vapers conscientiously recycle their vapes, a situation demanding immediate attention.
Taking cognisance of the growing apprehensions shared by consumers and retailers alike regarding the escalating volume of single-use vape waste infiltrating general waste streams, Phoenix 2 Retail, the UK’s fastest-growing vape supplier, has embarked on a proactive mission to combat this issue.
Chris Kelly, the CEO of Phoenix 2 Retail, states, “We know everyone sees the colossal impact single-use vapes have on the environment, which is why we have been working on a 360-degree recycling solution for retailers for several months. Phoenix 2 Retail is set to roll out over 200 recycling units this month, followed by a further 5,000 units by the end of the year, subject to retailer agreements. We aim to reach all 15,000 retailers by the following year, ensuring at least one recycling unit per store. This step is part of our company’s ongoing efforts to tackle the issue of improper vape disposal”.
By furnishing these recycling units, Phoenix 2 Retail aims to inspire vapers to dispose of their single-use vapes in an eco-friendly manner. The company firmly believes that by making recycling units readily accessible and convenient, a greater number of vapers will be inclined to embrace proper vape recycling practices.
In a strategic alliance, Phoenix 2 Retail has joined forces with a certified waste management company to ensure the responsible disposal of the collected vapes.
The process for retailers is straightforward: once the recycling units are filled, the waste management company collects them, promptly replacing them with empty units. Every vape collected via these units undergoes recycling right here in the UK, guaranteeing the eco-friendly disposal of each unit. By partnering with an accredited waste management company, Phoenix 2 Retail is adopting a responsible and sustainable approach to vape disposal. This collaboration ensures that all vapes collected through these units are recycled, thereby mitigating the environmental repercussions of non-biodegradable waste. Phoenix 2 Retail’s initiative, undertaken in collaboration with a certified waste management partner, underscores its unwavering commitment to both its customers and environmental preservation.
Phoenix 2 Retail’s dedication to addressing the issue of improper vape disposal is an integral part of their ongoing mission to safeguard the vaping sector within the FMCG industry. Their initiative represents a crucial stride in raising awareness about this issue and advancing towards a sustainable future.
