“Latest mobile application reveals 4G connections make up nearly 40% of all 5G connections”

London, UK – A recent survey conducted by the new app SignalTracker has revealed that despite the widespread introduction of 5G technology, many mobile devices in the UK are still predominantly relying on 4G connections. The study, which collected data from all major UK mobile networks, found that 38% of tests conducted while the 5G icon was displayed were actually using a 4G connection.

The reason for this discrepancy lies in the way that mobile devices display the 5G icon. While it may appear that a device is connected to a 5G network, it could actually be using a 4G connection from a base station that has 5G capabilities. This means that the 5G icon is not a reliable indicator of the actual connection speed.

To address this issue, SignalTracker has developed a unique feature that displays the actual connection type in real-time. The app also provides additional information such as signal strength, bands used, and download speed, allowing users to compare the performance of different networks in various locations. SignalTracker is available for download on Google Play.

According to Martin Sims, Managing Director of PolicyTracker, the company behind SignalTracker, consumers are not being properly informed about the true capabilities of their mobile connections. He believes that transparency is crucial in gaining public support for the development of 5G technology.

“Our signal survey of Central London clearly shows that actual 5G connections are significantly faster than those with only the icon displayed,” Sims said. “It is important for consumers to have accurate information about their mobile connections so they can make informed decisions.”

Further analysis of the survey results revealed that some mobile network operators are more likely to display the 5G icon when only a 4G connection is available. Three and Vodafone were found to have the most accurate 5G icons, with 94% and 93% of tests respectively showing a genuine 5G connection. On the other hand, O2 only had a true 5G connection in 66% of tests, while EE had the lowest percentage at 32%.

SignalTracker is produced by PolicyTracker, a company specializing in the wireless sector. The app has already collected data from over 11,000 tests conducted over the past two months. It is not only available for consumers, but also for commercial and regulatory organizations who are interested in obtaining detailed spectrum usage data.

It should be noted that most 5G connections in the UK are Non Standalone (NSA), meaning they utilize the existing 4G network to connect to the internet but use 5G for data download. The next stage of 5G technology, Standalone (SA), does not rely on 4G and is only partially deployed at the moment.
