“International Orangutan Day: A Call to Action for Conservation and Fundraising”
As we celebrate International Orangutan Day on August 19th, it is crucial to bring attention to the challenges faced by one of our closest animal relatives and the urgent need to protect them and their habitats. This day serves as a reminder to the global community to come together and take action to preserve these remarkable creatures and their rapidly disappearing homes. But how can we help?
Aside from fundraising efforts, doing good for others brings a profound sense of fulfilment and joy that goes beyond financial contributions. The act of helping others releases “the helper’s high,” a burst of euphoria caused by dopamine and endorphins in the brain. In addition, helping others has been found to increase immunity antibodies, making it officially good for one’s health.
To embrace the feel-good factor and boost wellbeing, International Animal Rescue (IAR) is hosting two fundraising events – The Rainforest Run on September 22nd and the Charity Abseil on October 5th. These events not only raise funds for the conservation of orangutans and their habitats but also provide an opportunity for individuals to make a positive impact and be a part of a community dedicated to creating change.
Leading the charge at The Rainforest Run is renowned actor Steven Cree, known for his versatile roles on television, film, and stage, including his portrayal of Ian Murray in the popular series Outlander. With his support for conservation initiatives, including his successful Sky Dive for IAR in 2023, Steven is now lacing up his running shoes to participate in The Rainforest Run as part of “Team Orangutan.” In a statement, Steven expressed his pride in supporting IAR, stating, “Their vision is a world where humans and animals coexist in sustainable ecosystems, and their mission is to build awareness and implement effective systems to protect habitats and animals.” He also encourages others to join him and participate in the event, emphasizing the feel-good factor that comes from making a difference.
In addition to The Rainforest Run, adventure-seekers can also take part in the unique opportunity to abseil down the 85-meter Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in October. Both events offer a chance to contribute to the conservation of orangutans while also experiencing the rewarding feel-good factor of directly making a positive impact on their future.
As we celebrate International Orangutan Day and the feel-good factor of fundraising, let us remember that these great apes share 97% of their DNA with humans, earning them the name “orangutan,” which means “forest person” in Malay. They are also the largest tree-dwelling mammals, with an arm span of up to seven feet. By participating in these fundraising efforts, not only are we helping to preserve these incredible creatures and their homes, but we are also contributing to a better future for all.
