A chaotic scene unfolded in the Harehills area of Leeds as unrest and disorder broke out, resulting in a police car being flipped on its side. According to reports, hundreds of people had gathered in the area, prompting a response from law enforcement.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that they were dealing with an “ongoing situation” that involved at least one fire being lit. Riot police were later seen arriving at the scene as the situation appeared to escalate.
Local councillor Salma Arif urged residents to stay at home as the situation unfolded. “Pockets of disorder” were reported by officers, who stated that a “disturbance” involving agency workers and children had sparked the unrest.
In an effort to maintain safety, authorities made the decision to relocate the workers and children to a secure location. However, this did not prevent the situation from escalating into the disorder that was later witnessed.
Images from the scene showed a large fire and a significant crowd of people. Videos circulating on social media also captured a police drone in the air and individuals throwing objects.
As the situation continued to unfold, riot police were deployed and the crowd began to disperse in some areas. Local MP Richard Burgon, who was on his way back to Leeds from Parliament, stated that he was in contact with the police and concerned residents about the incident.
While no injuries have been reported, authorities are advising people to avoid the area if possible. This is a developing story and more information will be provided as it becomes available. For the latest updates, please refresh the page.
