“HPS Advanced Pigging Technology Helps Lubricant Manufacturer Reduce Waste and Improve Efficiency”

Exol Lubricants, the UK’s largest independent lubricants manufacturer, has implemented Advanced Liquid Product Recovery (Pigging) Technology from pigging specialists HPS Product Recovery Solutions. The move is part of Exol’s strategic efforts to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance sustainability.

Thanks to this technology, Exol is now able to recover up to 50,000 litres of product daily at their Rotherham blending plant. This has not only resulted in substantial cost savings, but also supports Exol’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Pigging technology is a process used in industries that transfer liquids through pipelines, such as food, beverages, lubricants, chemicals, paint, and coatings manufacturing. It involves using a specialist projectile known as a “pig” to recover up to 99.5% of residual liquid product left in pipelines after transfers. This allows for the reuse or packaging of valuable lubricant oils that would have otherwise been wasted during cleaning.

In addition to reducing product loss, HPS pigging technology also minimises the need for cleaning chemicals and significantly reduces the risks of cross-contamination between products. Prior to implementing this technology, Exol faced major challenges with product loss and cross-contamination during the transfer of lubricants between storage, blending, and packaging. With the installation of multiple pigging systems, these issues have been effectively addressed, resulting in a more streamlined and efficient production process.

Peter Elgar, Executive Chairman at HPS, highlighted the impressive impact of the technology, stating that it has delivered outstanding results for Exol, recovering up to 50,000 litres of product daily and accelerating loading times by up to 50%.

Moreover, by significantly reducing waste and product loss, HPS pigging technology has also helped Exol minimise their environmental impact. This means fewer resources consumed, less energy required for cleaning, and a lower overall carbon footprint.

Elgar further emphasized the importance of these improvements, stating that HPS pigging systems stop companies from wasting significant amounts of perfectly usable product. By recovering product from process lines, the technology directly supports Exol’s commitment to environmental responsibility and makes a real impact on both operational efficiency and sustainability.

The success of the pigging system for lubricants has already led Exol to consider expanding the use of this technology across other areas of its operations.
