Hamburg Hosts Successful UEFA EURO 2024, Earning Title of Fan Capital

Hamburg, Germany – After four unforgettable weeks, the Host City of Hamburg has bid farewell to the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament. From June 14th to July 14th, Hamburg residents and visitors were able to experience the special atmosphere of the city and enthusiastically participate in the fan culture, making Hamburg the ultimate fan capital of the tournament. With solidarity, creativity, and impeccable organization, the Host City brought people from all over the world together, creating a landmark for the EURO 2024 that is now recognized worldwide.

The tournament ended on a high note as Spain was crowned the new European champion, topping the iconic container installation in Hamburg’s harbor. This container installation, which shares Hamburg’s maritime flair with the world, has been the hallmark of the city since the start of the knockout round. Made up of 28 containers, it measures around 45 meters in width and 10 meters in height, making it the world’s largest tournament bracket. Every morning, the containers were painted to reflect the outcomes of the previous day’s matches, creating an iconic image that will be remembered not just in Hamburg and Germany, but around the globe.

The container installation, located at O’Swaldkai in the Port of Hamburg, will be on display until July 20th, allowing Hamburg residents and visitors to admire it. The best views of the tournament bracket can be seen from the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg Plaza and the Strandkai in HafenCity Hamburg, or during a harbor tour.

In addition to the container installation, the ‘Matches of the Day’ installation in the Fan Zone was also a popular photo opportunity. Comprised of seven containers with a modular LED surface, it displayed the real-time scores of the current matches.

The UEFA EURO 2024 brought hundreds of thousands of people to Hamburg, with a total of five exciting matches played in the Volksparkstadion, including four group games and one quarter-final. These matches provided endless electrifying moments for the 250,000 fans who were lucky enough to attend the games live. But the excitement wasn’t limited to just the stadium – the centrally-located Fan Zone also drew in crowds, with a total of 614,000 people watching the 51 matches screened there.

Some of the most memorable scenes of the tournament were created by the passionate fans. The Dutch fans, with their sea of orange jerseys, took over the city during their team’s matches. The Turkish fans, who showed unwavering support for their team all the way to the quarter-finals, also left a lasting impression. The French and Portuguese fans also made their mark, with the French fans congregating around Stellingen S-Bahn station and the Portuguese fans decked out in their national colors in the Portuguese quarter. A total of 82,000 fans gathered in the Fan Zone to cheer on their teams during the quarter-finals.

The success of the UEFA EURO 2024 in Hamburg would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Host City Hamburg Media Team. The team, led by Hamburg Marketing GmbH, was instrumental in organizing and promoting the event, ensuring a memorable and seamless experience for all involved.
