Global Museums Unite with Ocean Foundation in Unprecedented Campaign Against Climate Change

Wednesday, August 7, 2024 – A unique campaign titled “Last Call for Beauty” has been launched by the renowned foundation Ocean us, in an effort to raise awareness about the extinction of coral reefs in the world’s oceans. The campaign, which involves bleaching famous paintings, is being carried out in collaboration with 11 of the world’s most prestigious museums.

The campaign, developed by Ocean us Creative Director and Head of Marketing and Communications Chema Herrera, aims to draw attention to the alarming increase in coral bleaching and raise funds for the Global Coral Restoration project. The project, led by Ocean us in partnership with leading marine scientists and experts, aims to rebuild the world’s ocean and restore nine million square meters of damaged reefs by 2030.

The campaign, which has been named “Bleaching Art”, involves digitally bleaching iconic masterpieces from famous museums such as the Palace of Versailles, the Albertina Museum, the Prado, the Guggenheim, and the National Gallery of Victoria. This creative and thought-provoking approach is meant to symbolize the gradual loss of color in the world’s oceans due to coral bleaching.

Linda Neugebauer, founder of Ocean us, emphasized the importance of coral reefs in our ecosystem, stating, “An ocean without functioning coral reefs is unthinkable.” She added, “We now have the opportunity to make a huge collective effort to restore the diversity and richness of the oceans. And to ensure that our world does not continue to lose color, and with it, life.”

The campaign has received overwhelming support from major international institutions and companies. The participating museums have also expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative. Christopher Leribault, President of the Palace of Versailles, France, shared his perspective on the campaign, saying, “I see many commonalities between the preservation of our environment and that of artistic masterpieces.”

The Global Coral Restoration project has also launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise 40 million euros for its implementation. The project has already received commitments from major companies and institutions and aims to launch its concrete plan for global coral restoration later this year.
