“Gerrards Cross’ Community Spirit to be Revitalized by New Management Committee”

Gerrards Cross Community Association (GXCA) held their annual general meeting on Thursday 5 December, 2024, where a new executive board was elected to lead the long-standing community charity.

The newly elected chair, Marcia Bell, has a strong connection to GXCA, having been a lifelong member. In her statement, she expressed her appreciation for the organization, stating that it is a valuable community asset. She highlighted the various activities and events that take place at GXCA, including special interest groups, sports clubs, and community events such as Diwali celebrations and quiz nights. She also mentioned one of the largest jumble sales in the UK, which is hosted by GXCA.

Bell acknowledged the challenges faced by GXCA due to the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing energy prices, as well as the aging membership. She stated that the new board’s goal is to attract new members by offering a diverse range of activities for all ages. As GXCA approaches its 80th anniversary, the new board is determined to ensure its continued success.

The first event organized by the new board was the Repair Café @ GXCA, which took place on November 30, 2024. The event saw friendly and skilled volunteers fixing small household items or teaching owners how to repair them for a small donation. The success rate of the event was 70%, and visitors also enjoyed homemade cakes and refreshments in the welcoming atmosphere of GXCA.

The Repair Café @ GXCA will return on January 18, 2025, and February 22, offering repair services for electrical, mechanical, woodworking, upholstery, and sewing items. The new board sees this event as an opportunity for the community to come together, learn new skills, and reduce waste.

For the younger residents, GXCA is hosting an activity day on December 21, 2024, with Mrs. Claus for children aged 4-10. Parents can drop off their children at the safe and festive environment of GXCA while they enjoy some stress-free shopping or relaxation time.

The annual Christmas pantomime, suitable for the whole family, will also be returning to GXCA on December 21-22. The Panto Company will be performing Sleeping Beauty, and limited tickets are still available.

During the AGM, the new trustees announced that GXCA will no longer support the padel court development on the site. The decision was made after considering the feedback from members and neighbors. While acknowledging that padel would be a great addition to the sports facilities in Gerrards Cross, the proposed site was deemed too close to residential homes and the Lutyens War Memorial. The new GXCA President, Guy Hearn, confirmed that the organization remains committed to operating public tennis courts and is seeking funding to refurbish the existing ones.
