Genie AI Set to Outperform GPT-4 with UK’s First AI Legal Assistant

Last Updated on: 22nd November 2023, 01:51 am

Genie AI, a prominent technology company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), is making significant progress in developing the UK’s first AI Legal Assistant. Leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology, Genie AI’s proprietary Large Language Models (LLMs) have surpassed previous iterations by scoring in the top 10% of all humans in the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), outperforming GPT-3 by a wide margin.

The impressive advancements in the capabilities of foundation models have been achieved by scaling up the underlying model, rather than fine-tuning specifically for the legal domain. Genie AI, based in London, aims to outperform GPT-4 in legal tasks by the end of the year, measured by accuracy under UK law.

The AI Legal Assistant developed by Genie AI will offer several innovative features that differentiate it from existing generative chat interfaces. The assistant will be integrated natively within the Genie editor, allowing real-time document-level workflows, red-flag review with risk assessment and suggestions, and simplified legal explanations. Genie AI’s vision is to create a ‘multi-modal’ AI Legal Assistant that can comment, review, reformat, highlight, annotate, suggest, and export, replicating human capabilities.

To surpass GPT-4, Genie’s AI Legal Assistant utilizes extensive legal and commercial datasets comprising tens of thousands of business contracts and legal precedents. It incorporates hundreds of prompts engineered by senior lawyers, tailored to legal use cases, and queries multiple models in addition to GPT-4. The data generated by the growing user base, including 1,000 law firms and companies with in-house legal teams, is anonymized, structured, and used to fine-tune Genie AI’s LLM.

Genie AI’s AI Legal Assistant is not limited to the UK, as the company is also testing its capabilities in other common law jurisdictions, such as the United States, Canada, India, Australia, and New Zealand.

Alex Papadopoulos, ML Research Scientist at Genie AI, expressed pride in the progress achieved, highlighting the use of proprietary data and extensive megacap company agreements to build their LLM. With continuous customer research, Genie AI aims to develop the world’s best AI Legal Assistant for the UK and beyond.
