Extreme Swimmer Nathalie Pohl Sets New Record by Swimming One Lap of Jersey Island in Exceptional Time

Last Updated on: 22nd November 2023, 04:45 pm

On 18 July, 2023 Nathalie Pohl made history by becoming the first German woman to successfully swim around the British Channel Island of Jersey. The 28-year-old extreme swimmer completed the 66-kilometre round-trip in just 9:43:27 hours, making her the fourth fastest woman to complete the physically and mentally challenging marathon swim.

The Round Jersey swim takes swimmers past some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, including long sandy beaches and the gentle cliffs of the northern coast. Despite the help of the currents, which can be favourable depending on the tides, the swimmer can expect to be in the water for 10-12 hours, pushing them to their limits.

Nathalie Pohl was elated to have finished the swim so well, saying, “I set a world record here in Jersey three years ago now. I wanted to come back again and prove what I am capable of. The fact that it went so well this time, too, is something I’m very proud of. And it shows me that the tough training was all worth it.”

Nathalie Pohl has been mastering open-water swimming since eight years ago, when she attempted to swim the English Channel. Although it nearly cost her life, she returned one year later to break the German record for the 34-kilometre swim. She also holds the world record for the 22.5-kilometre stretch that separates the Channel Island from the French mainland.

The extreme swimmer will now be taking on the seventh and final stage of the “Ocean’s Seven” next year, the chilly 14-degree waters of the North Channel separating Ireland and Scotland. If she succeeds, she will be the 23rd person in the world and the first German woman ever to accomplish it.

Nathalie Pohl commented, “Achieving success in the North Sea again is something very special for me. This is where I experienced my greatest defeat but also two incredible victories.”

The Round Jersey swim is an energy-sapping 10 to 12 hours, passing long sandy beaches and the gentle cliffs of the northern coast, but Pohl has been mastering open-water swimming for the past eight years. In 2020, she returned to the North Sea with her sights set on the Jersey Channel, where she broke the world record at 5:29:37 hours.

Now, Pohl is looking ahead to the seventh and final stage of the “Ocean’s Seven”, the chilly 14-degree waters of the North Channel separating Ireland and Scotland. If she succeeds, she will be the 23rd person in the world and the first German woman ever to accomplish it.

Pohl added, “Achieving success in the North Sea again is something very special for me. This is where I experienced my greatest defeat but also two incredible victories.”
