Brighton, UK – On Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, Elijah’s Yellow Squares came to life in an exclusive, hybrid, digital experience of his Make The Ting 360º performance. Part grime set, part lecture, and part immersive installation, this event was a unique leap from live to digital, made possible by support from The Space, world-renowned digital arts charity Lighthouse, and independent venue The Old Market.
The Make The Ting 360º performance was originally commissioned by The Old Market and Lighthouse in December 2023. It was funded by The Space, a national organization that supports the cultural sector to be digitally innovative. The event was well received by a lively audience, who were treated to a one-of-a-kind immersive experience featuring an interactive lecture, immersive 360º technology, and a live grime MC set with special guest Jammz.
The teams behind this event experimented with hybrid performance structures, redefining what it means to be “immersive” for an audience. This included wrapping the venue in 360º degrees of Elijah’s Yellow Squares and live streaming through Meta glasses for a multi-dimensional experience.
Now, this groundbreaking performance is available to watch online, along with an animated highlights edition and an exclusive interactive 360º video. These videos were created to elevate accessibility and interactivity for audiences, showcasing the collaboration between Lighthouse and The Old Market.
According to Jammz, this performance was just one iteration of the experience, with plans to continue experimenting and engaging with audiences in new and exciting ways. Elijah also spoke about his experimentation with performative formats, taking the Yellow Squares out of Instagram and bringing them to life in a real-life setting.
The capture process for the Make The Ting 360º performance was also shared with the 2024 cohort of Lighthouse Young Creatives, providing the next generation of artists and thinkers with unique insight into immersive binaural sound, audio edits, and the intricacies of 360º viewing platforms.
The full-length video of the performance captures the collaboration between Lighthouse and The Old Market, with the 360º camera suspended from the ceiling to capture the audience’s live reactions in real-time. Additionally, an animated video of Royal T’s digital work, also available online, brings Elijah’s Yellow Squares to life in a 10-minute highlight reel.
