“EmpowerHER Nominated for Prestigious Award at Largest Sustainability Film Festival in the World”

London gears up for the 6th annual Big Syn International Film Festival, set to run from Monday, October 21st to Saturday, October 26th in 2024. The festival, known as the world’s largest sustainability film festival, will showcase nearly 150 films from over 120 countries, reaching a global audience of over 45 million. The grand opening of the festival trailer took place at London’s iconic Piccadilly Lights, Europe’s biggest screen.

Led by a Grand Jury of esteemed OSCAR, BAFTA, and EMMY award-winners, as well as leaders from the United Nations, House of Lords, and prominent figures in sustainability, policy, and media, the festival aims to bring attention to pressing issues facing our environment, economy, and society.

Viewers are invited to attend the FREE screenings of the films on the festival’s website, www.bigsyn.org, and have the chance to win two tickets to the gala awards ceremony.

Among the impressive selection of films being screened, one notable film is Our Sansar’s EmpowerHER: Rights, Protection and Hope. Our Sansar, a UK charity that supports vulnerable children in Nepal, presents a short film that showcases the positive changes possible in the lives of girls who have survived gender-based violence. The film sheds light on the struggles these girls face, living in a region where 1 in 3 girls and women experience violence and 1 in 2 girls are forced into marriage at a young age. Julia Krepska, the charity’s Founder, expressed her gratitude for being selected as one of the finalists, stating, “It is so important that the issues experienced by girls all over the world are highlighted. We hope that we can reach many viewers worldwide.”

The festival has garnered support from various national and international organizations, including major UN agencies such as the World Meteorological Agency, International Maritime Organization, and UNRIC, as well as leading art and culture institutions like the British Council and Directors UK.

Justine Simons OBE, London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, praised the festival, stating, “The storytelling power of film is a brilliant way to entertain and inform audiences. Big Syn Film Fest will be hosting a wide range of free screenings that will raise awareness about important sustainability issues and inspire urgent action at a time when we are faced with one of humanity’s biggest challenges – climate change. From features to animations, these films will show us that we all have a part to play in looking after our planet, as we build a better London for everyone.”

In addition to entertaining audiences, the films being screened aim to educate and enlighten viewers about pressing global issues such as climate change, plastic pollution, conservation, biodiversity, mental health, equity, diversity, and gender equality. These films share relatable human stories of struggle, resilience, adaptation, innovation, and change from all corners of the world, with the hope of inspiring positive actions from viewers.

The festival’s founders, Dr. Ragini G Roy and Dr. Sourav Roy, extend an invitation to viewers, stating, “We are delighted that over 300 charities from across the world have participated this year, and over 50 inspirational charity films are currently screening to millions worldwide, spreading their messages of hope and change.”

The winners of the festival will be announced at a red carpet gala awards ceremony at Curzon Soho on November 8th, with all winners being featured on Europe’s biggest screen, London’s Piccadilly Lights, on November 14th, 2024.
