Escape Fake, a technology studio based in Austria, has released their latest educational game, “Trouble with eLiza,” on Tuesday 14 May, 2024. In a time where the spread of digital misinformation is on the rise, this game aims to challenge players to correct distorted historical facts and combat the proliferation of false information.
According to Statista, over 70% of Europeans encounter false information on a weekly basis, making “Trouble with eLiza” a crucial tool in promoting media literacy. The game combines 3D puzzles and riddles to address the effects of deepfakes, social media algorithms, and filter bubbles. Players take on the role of digital detectives, working alongside a reverse reality hacker to prevent the collapse of the European Union.
Since its initial release in 2019, “Trouble with eLiza” has been played by over 100,000 users in five different languages, making it a valuable resource for educators, families, and media literacy advocates. “Our approach merges playful learning with augmented reality, making complex topics accessible and engaging,” explains Thomas Layer-Wagner, CEO of Polycular.
The development of “Trouble with eLiza” was a collaborative effort, involving media education, pedagogy, and journalism experts. Along with the game’s release, educational resources such as a toolkit and an online course have been made available to enhance teaching strategies. Irina Paraschivoiu, COO of Polycular, highlights the game’s intellectual stimulation and its ability to develop problem-solving skills that can be applied in various contexts.
Escape Fake is supported by Expert Forum (Romania), La Fabbrica (Italy), and ProProgressione (Hungary), and is funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe Programme and the European Media and Information Fund.
