Death of Tony O’Reilly, former Irish rugby star and prominent business leader

Former Irish international rugby player and prominent businessman, Sir Tony O’Reilly, has passed away at the age of 88. He died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin on Saturday. The news of his death has been met with an outpouring of condolences from the Irish community.

The Irish Rugby Football Union expressed their sadness at the loss, stating, “A legend of the game has passed. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.” Ireland’s Premier, Simon Harris, also paid tribute to Sir Tony, calling him a “trailblazer” who paved the way for other Irish business figures.

In a statement, Sir Tony’s family shared their grief and reflected on his remarkable achievements in both business and sports. “In the coming days, there will be many worthy tributes made to Tony O’Reilly’s unique and extraordinary accomplishments,” they said. “But, for us, he was a dearly-loved dad and a granddad. He lived a great life and we were fortunate to spend time with him in his final weeks.”

Born in Dublin in 1936, Sir Tony made his debut in international rugby in 1955 and went on to become the youngest player ever selected for the British Lions team, which brings together players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. In his successful business career, he was responsible for establishing the widely recognized dairy brand, Kerrygold. He also served as the chairman of the food giant Heinz and took over Independent Newspapers, publisher of the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, and Evening Herald, in 1973.

In addition to his achievements in business, Sir Tony was also known for his philanthropy. He founded The Ireland Funds, an organization that raised funds from donors in the US to support reconciliation projects in Ireland. In 2001, he was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding contributions to Northern Ireland.

Tributes have been pouring in for Sir Tony from various prominent figures, including Blue Peter star, Father of murdered hostage, and Boardwalk Empire star. Ireland’s deputy premier, Micheal Martin, also expressed his condolences, stating, “Saddened to learn of the passing of Tony O’Reilly, a pioneering spirit who had an extraordinary impact on Irish business, sport, media, and society.” He also highlighted Sir Tony’s role in changing the global narrative on peace and reconciliation through The Ireland Funds.

Sir Tony is survived by his six children. His legacy as a successful businessman, philanthropist, and sportsman will continue to be remembered and celebrated by the Irish community.
