Community to receive support from Hope Spring water project in battle against cholera

On Thursday 11 July, 2024, Hope Spring, a clean water advocacy and water poverty alleviation charity, proudly handed over a clean water system to the community of Akute Odo in Nigeria. The Herefordshire based NGO successfully completed the borehole powered water system within a four-week timeframe.

The timely completion of the project is especially significant as neighboring communities have recently reported outbreaks of cholera, a deadly bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated water.

Thanks to the generous contributions of partners, including Ozami online cards, the clean water system gifted by Hope Spring consists of an 80-meter deep borehole fitted with a submersible pump, which pumps water into a 4,000-liter water tank. The tank is elevated on a four-meter tall scaffolding, and gravity is used to push water through pipes to a fetching area with four standpipes.

The community of Akute Odo had been attempting to construct a community borehole for several years without success, due to lack of funds. With a population of 180 people, the community was struggling to find the resources necessary to complete the project. When they reached out to Hope Spring, the NGO proposed a partnership to construct a borehole in their community. This partnership resulted in the first borehole in the community’s history.

During the handing over ceremony of the project, Dr. Rahmat Adebisi, Hope Spring’s director in Nigeria, expressed her satisfaction with the completion of the project and its potential to improve the community’s health and hygiene. She also mentioned the recent reports of cholera outbreaks in nearby communities and the importance of providing clean water to prevent such diseases. Dr. Rahmat also thanked Mr. Luqman Adekola, who co-funded the project with Hope Spring.

The leaders of Akute Odo also expressed their gratitude to all those who made the water project possible. They highlighted the significant impact this project will have on the daily lives of women and children in the community, as they will no longer have to spend hours searching for clean water.

This project marks the fourth clean water system completed by Hope Spring in 2024. For more information about their projects, please visit their website and social media pages.
