SOS Africa, in partnership with Shepton Mallet Prison and Aardvark Endeavours, is proud to announce a groundbreaking charity abseil event on June 15th and 16th, 2024. The event, set against the backdrop of the prison’s 400-year history, aims to raise funds for the SOS Africa children’s charity.
Families and individuals alike are invited to participate in this unforgettable experience, coinciding with Father’s Day weekend. Participants will have the rare opportunity to explore the prison workshop, walk its historic walkways, and abseil from the rooftop. This event offers a unique challenge for both seasoned abseilers and first timers, providing a way to conquer fears and bond with loved ones.
“We are honored to collaborate with SOS Africa for this exhilarating event,” says Joel Campbell, CEO of Shepton Mallet Prison. “Transforming a space historically associated with limitation into one of liberation and opportunity symbolizes our commitment to positive community engagement and support for charitable causes.”
SOS Africa has a history of hosting impactful events, including the successful ‘Nominate an Inmate’ initiative which raised over £60,000. This latest adventure, held at the iconic Shepton Mallet Prison, is highly anticipated following the charity’s past abseil challenges at venues such as Glastonbury Festival Pyramid Stage, Wells Cathedral, and King Alfred’s Tower.
Founder of SOS Africa, Matt Crowcombe, shares his excitement: “Returning to Shepton Mallet Prison for this special event is a thrill. Working alongside the prison team, we’re set to offer an experience that not only challenges participants but also deeply connects them with the local heritage, all while supporting a noble cause.”
To participate in this highly anticipated event, individuals are required to secure their spot with a £20 deposit and commit to a fundraising goal. With options for both adults and children, it’s a fantastic way for everyone to contribute to a great cause, experience the thrill of abseiling, and engage with the rich history of Shepton Mallet Prison.
