Chancellor’s NHS Investment Pledge Welcomed by Patients Association

Government Announces Investment in NHS Services to Tackle Growing Waiting Lists

London, Monday 28 October, 2024 – In response to the ongoing struggles of the National Health Service (NHS), which has been described as being in “critical condition” by Lord Darzi, the government has announced a significant investment in elective activity, surgical hubs, and diagnostics. This investment, which has been embargoed until 22.31 on Monday 28th October 2024, is seen as a vital step towards addressing the needs of the 7.6 million patients currently waiting for care.

The success of surgical hubs in reducing waiting times has been well-documented. However, to effectively implement this strategy, it is crucial to have sufficient staffing capacity, robust administrative systems, and effective care navigation in place. Furthermore, it is essential for surgical hubs to be evenly distributed across the country, with a particular focus on areas of high deprivation, and to be easily accessible by public transport. Clear communication and coordination between patients, local hospitals, and surgical hubs will also be critical in ensuring patients understand their care journey.

Rachel Power, Chief Executive of the Patients Association, welcomed the investment, stating that it is a “welcome first step towards tackling the enormous waiting lists that patients are facing.” However, she also expressed concerns about the upcoming winter season, which is expected to be challenging for both patients and front-line staff. Power emphasized the importance of strong administrative support, clear communication with patients, and genuine partnership working with communities to ensure the success of this investment. She also stressed the need for support for the NHS workforce, who will be responsible for delivering the additional appointments. According to Power, getting these fundamental aspects right, in addition to the investment, will be crucial in seeing the real impact of these much-needed resources.

The Patients Association is an independent charity that advocates for improvements in health and social care for patients. They believe that patients should be actively involved in decisions made about their care and in the design of the health and care system. Through their helpline and information services, they provide support and information to thousands of people each year, enabling them to advocate for themselves.
