According to Manhattan Associates Inc. (NASDAQ: MANH), a recent study reveals a notable shift in the UK’s shopping habits this Christmas season, with a focus on affordability over sustainability. Conducted by YouGov, the study indicates that the financial strain of the cost-of-living crisis is leading 32% of Brits to overlook sustainability in their festive purchases.
Economic Factors Outweighing Sustainability Concerns
Craig Summers, Manhattan Associates’ Managing Director UKI, MEA & Nordics, acknowledges the economic influence on shopping trends: “The golden quarter and holiday season is well underway but clearly the state of the economy is having an effect on customer behaviour – unfortunately, it looks as if cost is trumping sustainability just now.”
The study, however, indicates a latent concern for sustainability among Brits, with many still prioritising sustainable packaging and lifecycle. Moreover, a significant proportion are open to adjustments like consolidated deliveries for environmental benefits.
Challenges for Retailers in Balancing Costs and Green Initiatives
Retailers face the dual challenge of meeting consumer demands for both affordability and sustainability. As they navigate increased scrutiny over environmental claims, there is a growing need to embed sustainability in product design and supply chain processes. Reflecting on the year’s challenges, Summers states: “This year has been tough for retailers and consumers across the board… While inflation is beginning to ease, the road to recovery will not happen overnight… but hopefully we will see greener shoots of recovery for the economy, and also consumer impetus for sustainability, return in the spring.”
