Medical professionals from the UK are increasingly seeking opportunities in Australia, with a surge in applications and enquiries received by Australian medical clinics and recruiters.
As junior doctors protest for higher pay and the NHS faces mounting pressure, Australia has emerged as an appealing destination, as stated by Gemma Gough, the managing director of Health Recruitment Australia.
Gough, who moved from Guernsey, UK to South Australia six years ago and has since worked as a practice management leader, explained, “It’s easy to understand why many UK doctors are relocating to Australia or seriously considering pursuing their careers abroad.”
She continued, “Concerns regarding working conditions for healthcare professionals in the UK have been growing for several years, and the pandemic has only exacerbated these concerns. While remuneration is a significant factor, the doctors we converse with also prioritise their lifestyle, an area where the UK struggles to compete with Australia.”
Reflecting on her own experience, Gough acknowledged the challenges of relocating across the globe but expressed no regrets, emphasising Australia as an excellent environment for professional growth, raising a family, and crafting a fulfilling life.
The British Medical Association is leading industrial action against the NHS, citing a gradual erosion of pay for junior doctors over the past 15 years, leading to an exodus of medical professionals from the country.
Gough noted that while the challenges faced by the UK health system are disheartening, Australian clinics and hospitals are eager to address their own urgent requirement for qualified doctors.
“Australia is also grappling with a severe shortage of doctors, compelling clinics and hospitals to search internationally for GPs who can meet the escalating needs of local communities,” Gough explained.
She added, “UK doctors are highly suitable because the transition process is relatively seamless, and, equally important, there is a strong cultural alignment between the two countries.”
One example is Polly Large, who recently commenced her work as a GP at AHA Clinics, a medical practice in South Australia, after relocating from the UK three months ago.
“Moving to the other side of the world to establish my career and life was not a decision I took lightly. However, after careful consideration, the opportunity in Australia was simply too good to pass up,” shared Large.
She further stated, “The process requires time and presents its own challenges, but I have received exceptional support every step of the way. Now that I am settled and integrating into the local community, I am thoroughly enjoying my new home and eagerly anticipating what the future holds in Australia.”
