Ortus-iHealth and Happitech have joined forces to launch a new Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Virtual Ward, in a move that will free up hospital beds and reduce the need for unnecessary outpatient appointments.
AF is the most common heart rhythm disorder in the UK, affecting over 1.5 million people. It is estimated that there are at least another 270,000 people who remain undiagnosed. Those with AF have a five-time greater chance of having a potentially fatal or life-changing stroke, and it is believed to be the cause of one in five cases.
The Virtual Ward will utilise Happitech’s hardware-free heart rhythm monitoring solution. This uses the camera and flash on a smartphone to detect volumetric changes in blood in the fingertip. Results are sent directly to a clinician-facing dashboard, allowing for timely intervention and management by the AF Virtual Ward team.
