From pasta to cured meats and everything in-between, the recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous self-portrait was created to celebrate 500 years since his death and his love for cooking.
London-based food artist Carl Warner, was the mastermind behind this bizarre yet remarkable life like work of art which took him and his team over 20 hours to create.
Carl Warner, food artist, said: “I was thrilled when Bella Italia asked me to take on this challenge – the abundance of fresh, beautiful ingredients from the new menu gave me a great ‘palette’ to work from when reimagining the classic artwork by one of the great Italian masters. The contrasting textures and shapes of the different varieties of pasta worked particularly well when defining the details in the face of Da Vinci, which I just hope he would have enjoyed.”
The masterpiece was painstakingly pieced together with Italian ingredients that included olives and mozzarella for da Vinci’s eyes, fusilli to replicate his eye brows and a chicken wing for his nose.
Da Vinci’s was a well known food lover, he documented his thoughts on kitchen inventions, table etiquette and cooking.
